The wikipedia page is a good place to begin: http://wikipedi a.org/wiki/Ther emin About the helmet: It was made of papier-mâché with a custom LED visor built in ... post production! using Softimage XSI and Adobe After Effects! Yes, it was a visual effect! 3D modeling, manual rotoscoping, and motion tracking/motion stabilization tricks were employed to pull this off. A LED array with animated text was projected on to a manually rotoscoped 3D visor, that was subsequently composited with the original footage using motion trackers in After Effects. The helmet itself took three days to make. I used 7 layers of card stock/normal stock paper strips in a special heavy mix paste recipe. The shape was built around a custom mold of shipping foam and gaffers tape. It was finished off with gunmetal grey paint. The visor was made of plastic cut from a microwave oven splash cover I found at Target for 5 dollars, laminated on both sides with Limo dark auto window tinting. I could see out, but the translucent plastic from the microwave splash cover along with the heavy tinting made it a little bit difficult. On the inside, the helmet was padded with custom cut felt blocks to fit my head size perfectly. The total weight was around 0.5 Kg (about 1 pound). This video was made for love. Please share it.

Still working on the LED front screen (Lots of work...) but I figured I'd give you guys a preview of my new diggs. I tried to get closer to the newer/slimmer version of the helmet. Better EL and EL drivers helped free up some internal room and let me shrink it down. The lights are way(2-3x) brighter this time. The lights are driven by a 5 channel EL wire sequencer with 6 different patters and the scrollers are hacked belt buckles that each hold 6 custom messages. This is for all the people that wanted a Daft Punk song. I learned it by ear so I don't have the notes to it. And it's too much to note out plus it's a lot of just octaves. I hit a couple wrong notes so you could tell i was actually playing. heh I'm playing on a Microkorg Synth and Banshee Talk Box.

Instead, he removes his helmet and reveals a printed circuit board face. He repeatedly slams the helmet onto the ground until it is shattered. Using one of the shards as a burning-glass, he focuses the sunlight to set his hand ablaze. The film ends showing the robot, completely on fire, walking in slow motion through darkness.
