SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY - DONNA SUMMER
Add to EJ Playlist 'She Works Hard For The Money' - Donna Summer Written by Summer, the song worked it's way to become a Billboard top hit and anthem for her. The sleeve of the CD showed Summer as a waitress along with Onetta, the song's inspiration featured in this clip as well as the lyrics. The song was a tribute to and became an anthem for 'working women' everywhere. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (1983). Summer opened the Grammys that year with a rousing performance of the soon to be women's classic.
She works hard for the money
So hard for it honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
Onetta there in the corner stands
And wonders where she is and
It's strange to her
Some people seem to have everything
Nine a.m. on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
And she's looking real pretty
Just waitin' for her clientele
She works hard for the money
So hard for it honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
Twenty eight years have
Come and gone
And she's seen a lot of tears
Of the ones who come in
They really seem to need her there
It's a sacrifice working day to day
What little money just tips for pay
But it's worth it all
To hear them say that they care
She works hard for the money
So hard for it honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
(She) already knows
She's seen her bad times
(she) already knows
These are the good times
But never sell out
She never will
Not for a dollar bill
She works Hard

On and on - Erykah Badu (Acapella)

Sade - Give It Up (with lyrics)
Add to EJ Playlist "Give It Up" from Sade's 1988 album "Stronger Than Pride."
Tell me the secrets of your soul
Give it up and let go
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all
I give you it all
I couldn't give you more if I tried
I give you my love
I give you everything I feel inside
I give you my life
It isn't a lie
I tell only the truth
I give you my life
I think I'd even die for you
Surrender your love
Surrender your love to me
Surrender your love
Surrender your love to me
Tell me the secrets of your soul
Give it up and let go
I give you my love
I couldn't give you more if I tried
I give you it all
I give you everything I feel inside
I give you my life
It isn't a lie
I tell only the truth
I give you my life
I think I'd even die for you
Surrender your love
Surrender your love to me
Surrender your love
Surrender your love to me
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all
Give it up, give it all

Sade - Clean Heart (with lyrics)
Add to EJ Playlist "Clean Heart" from Sade's 1988 album "Stronger Than Pride."
Clean heart
Clean and sharp
Clean dream
Bad start
He loved his brother and his sister
Luke and Tony called him "Mister"
They made him feel much more like a man
He loved his daddy though he never told him
And how he loved his mama
He loved, he loved her like, like an Italian
Little Janet said you look so fine, so fine
Something in his smile
Made them feel like strangers
And then he straightened his belt
With a lover's touch
And he said I'm gonna bring home
The things that are out of your clutch
Seemed like the hottest night in summer
A heat that makes you feel like dying
Somewhere in the next block
There was a baby crying
Finger on the trigger for the years to come
Finger on the trigger for the years to come
And as the moon slid up
Over the restless streets
Sirens mocking and people stop to see
Oh, their greedy eyes don't realize
He's someone's son
Finger on the trigger for the years to come
Finger on the trigger for the years to come

Sade - Maureen (with lyrics)
Add to EJ Playlist "Maureen" from Sade's 1985 album "Promise."
Maureen
It's hard to explain
I'm never gonna see you again
And you'll never meet my new friends
Maureen, I miss you
I just can't explain
I'm never gonna see you again
I wish you could meet my new friends
Walking along the subway listening to
Loving you is easy a capella
You were a souped up car in that rent-a-go-cart town
And I miss you Maureen
We're as thick as thieves
Maureen, Maureen
Remember when my mother said to me
Sade don't you come home too late
'Til you're back, I stay awake
And Maureen
With the boys you could tell at a glance
You'd say he looks good
Let's hope he can dance
Wicky wacky party to the...
Where are we going tonight
And what will you be wearing
Shown like a souped up car in that rent-a-go-cart town
And I miss you Maureen, I miss you girl
You were my best friend
Never gonna see you again, Maureen
And you'll never meet my new friends
You really were a pearl in my world, Maureen
Maureen
It's hard to explain
You'll never call 'round to see me again
You'll never meet my new friends
Never meet my new friends
Never meet my new friends
Never meet my new friends

Slave Song by SADE
Add to EJ Playlist The discussion on slavery in America (and the Caribbean) should never digress into a guilt trip. It's not about guilt, it's about acknowledgement . We live in the fallout of slavery. African-America ns were severely psychologically damaged by slavery. The effects linger, over a hundred fifty years since. For that reason we should never forget slavery until we at last acknowledge and grapple with its debilitating residue. Sade has not forgotten.
God Bless Sade.
This is a deep and very conscious song from Sade. We always knew she was special, but this demonstrates a depth that is FAR BEYOND that of your average singer.
