Introduction to the Zen Throwing Routine with Ultimate Rob

Add to EJ Playlist  You can download the full Zen Throwing Routine at: http://bit.ly/z enthrowing. Visit Ultimate Rob's store at: http://www.ulti materobstore.co m The Zen Throwing Routine, developed by Ben Wiggins, is a combination of a group of exercises that he found to help develop his own balance and versatility in throwing. He was inspired to put this into a cohesive form as a partner-slash-a lternative to Lou Burruss' Kung Fu Throwing, which is a very effective plan with very different goals. What is balance? For Ben, balance is another way of saying "what I can do". If my footwork is balanced, I can throw on either side. If handwork is balanced, I can throw quickly or powerfully. If my skills are balanced, I can catch as consistently and creatively as I can throw. If my mentality is balanced, I can throw in the best of situations and also in the worst. No routine or doctrine can ever take the place of the most fundamental throwing skill. That skill is in making every practice throw as game-like as possible, both mentally and physically. If I am throwing with a stationary receiver, it can be hard for me to hold a serious conversation. Why? On every throw, I am imagining a different and realistic receiver who just happens to catch the disc at the exact spot my partner is standing on. They may not see them, but I see receivers going deep, cutting in, standing poached, tripping and getting back up. I see wide open swings and stall-9 blanketed runners. I see some of their jerseys whipping in the wind, some of their cleats clogged with mud, and others surrounded by a stadium's worth of screaming fans. Sometimes I throw in spite of my completely imagined injuries, and other times I can actually conjure and feel the awful pit-monster of fear and nervousness in my stomach. Do you get 10 chances in a row to throw a hammer in a game? If not, then don't practice 10 hammers in a row. For your basic throwing, create an organic mixture of the types of throws and situations you'll see on the field. This is a great compliment to the Kung Fu Throwing routine. I would recommend doing Kung Fu Throwing twice a week and Zen Throwing once per week. Muscle memory development is the most important part of becoming a better thrower, which is what Kung Fu Throwing will help you with. But Zen Throwing will help ensure that your technique and release is as clean as possible which will help speed up your improvement and prevent injuries from throwing a lot.

Kung Fu Throwing with Ultimate Rob | Learn to Throw Better

Add to EJ Playlist  You can download a printable PDF of the Kung Fu Throwing routine here: http://bit.ly/k ungfuthrowing. Kung Fu Throwing is a system developed by Lou Burruss and Mike Caldwell in 2005. He wanted to come up with a structured throwing plan to help developing throwers. As the only two Seattle Sockeye players who lived on Capitol Hill at the time, Mike and Lou would meet often to throw. Lou solicited Mike to help him with this and to their surprise they found that it was an excellent system for established throwers. (They were in their 7th and 9th years on Sockeye.) They did KFT once a week the entire season and Lou's throws were more consistently on than any other year. The philosophy of the KFT seeks to improve a thrower in three ways. First and simplest, repetition. The entire program takes about an hour and features ~450 throws. Second, it seeks to challenge the limitations of a thrower by pushing them to throw beyond their comfort. Not so much in terms of distance, but in range of release. Lastly, the central portion of the program tries to articulate the different components of a throw. It separates the wrist from the arm from the shoulder from the hips from the feet. Young throwers are often limited to a single forehand where the handwristarmsho uldertorsohipsf eet have to all be doing the same motion every time. What if a defender takes it away? What if you need to get around a marker? Really great throwers make adjustments large and small to their footwork and release points in order to beat defenders. A warning about KFT: it is very physically rigorous. Mike and Lou felt taxed by it and they were in incredible shape and their bodies in ultimate frisbee conditioning for years. KFT should be treated like a workout and you should pay attention to your body. Pay attention to the upper hamstring on your step leg (not your pivot leg) because that is where most of the stress of this workout goes. Also consider a partial workout to begin. Cut the 25s down to 15s or even 10s to start. The shorts and jersey I'm wearing are from my official store on SAVAGE ultimate: http://www.ulti materobstore.co m. Introduction to Ultimate Frisbee | Pretty Much the Best Sport Ever

Add to EJ Playlist  If you've ever had someone ask you what ultimate frisbee is, and I know we all have, show them this video. Although I do compete in dog disc competitions with Davy Whippet (and we currently hold 5 World Records together) it's true that ultimate frisbee is not played with dogs. But I encourage you to take the opportunity to educate someone when they ask you "is ultimate where you throw to a dog" or "do you play by yourself or with other people"? Instead of getting annoyed with them, realize that they're asking because they care. Don't be annoyed with them -- teach them about frisbee. About disc sports. Tell them that there are dog disc competitions, there are self caught flight competitions, there are disc golf competitions but that the sport you play and love, ultimate frisbee, is a combination of football, basketball and rugby but it's non contact, there are 7 players on the field per team and it combines jumping, throwing, diving, running and catching. What makes ultimate different than any other sport is that it's played with a disc. A disc flies through through the air and doesn't follow the same rules as a ball. A ball goes up and comes down. A disc flies! Why do you think Stancil Johnson penned this quote? When a ball dreams, it dreams that it's a frisbee.

Cutting for Field Sports - First Progressions

Add to EJ Playlist  If we can categorize systematize field movement progressions in the same way we do strength training progressions we can develop athletes more efficiently. I like to select drills that train adduction, abduction and extension. In this video we don't talk much about extension. However, it is almost always present, the movements often happen together ... i.e. Adduction & Extension. Our linear speed progressions emphasize pure extension. In field movement athletes will do all three without thinking (regardless of position or sport). All of my field movement progressions are based on these concepts. It is similar to breaking down upper body strength training into Pushing and Pulling. My hope is that this video will give you a better idea of how to program your field sessions in order to target all three functions of the hip and cut and play D with more precision and efficiency. These drills are the simplest variations. Master these then look forward to learning progression at Morrill Performance clinics and hopefully some videos in the next few months. http://strength andconditioning fitness.com/ser vices/ Make sure you guys follow Marco! A bunch of people have the same idea as you, " in ultimate people can cheat to win and that is not moral." Being completely honest, I feel the same way but the video in my opinion (or at least how I envisioned it) has a different message. The idea for me is that doing whatever it takes to win within reason. I'm not telling high school kids to go out onto the field and start throwing elbows. A majority of new or emerging ultimate players I meet lack the drive to give it their all. This video shows players giving 100% on the field in order to perform their absolute best. Of course I've gotten multiple comments taking the video way to literally and if that's what you want to do, then fine. My intentions weren't to make ultimate look like a free for all, it was to spark some drive in people who have yet to see their full potential. From a competitive standpoint second place sucks and I'm willing to bet most people would rather be sitting at the top then right below it. I've played at a pretty high level considering my age and I'm an extremely "mental" player. I need to get myself mentally ready for a game just as much as I need to physically. If I'm not walking onto the field knowing that I will be 100% emotionally and physically committed to the game I'm about to play, then there really isn't any point in me being there. That kind of fire under my ass is what really makes me perform the way that I do. All I tried to do was emulate that "fire under my ass" feeling I had before each game. Then again if ultimate for you exists in a much more relaxed setting then I'm not going to sit here and tell you that you're wrong."

Not Just a Game

Add to EJ Playlist  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PLEASE READ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ I'm going to nationals in a couple of weeks and I wanted to make a video showing my deep love for the game of ultimate. I just put together a couple of my favorite clips from youtube that really captured the essence of the game. I personally know many of the players in these videos as well. Ultimate Frisbee Tutorial - Throwing a Backhand

Add to EJ Playlist  The most fundamental throw in ultimate is the backhand. It's important to learn the mechanics of the throw (grip, wrist snap, body movement) before spending a lot of time on the technique. If you don't develop the proper mechanics when you first learn to throw a backhand, then you will have trouble later on learning to pull and huck since being able to throw a disc long requires solid mechanics.
