[HD] '90 Subaru Loyale Offroading (May 23, 2013)
Add to EJ Playlist Nothing major. Just some light offroading that is well within the capabilities of the car. I never even switched into 4WD Hi, let alone 4WD Lo. Entire video was done in FWD. I didn't want to do anything major, since my engine is still relatively new to my car. Plus, without a lift kit, ground clearance is definitely an issue for major offroading. Anyways, just driving through the woods in my Soob. Nice to be in the Subaru's natural habitat. :P I would've gone much further on the trail, but as I started climbing in elevation, I reached some snow. Snow is nothing for the Subaru, but again, ground clearance is an issue. Snow is unpredictable and I can get high-centered if I'm not careful. By the time I got to the snow, I was far from civilization. Without another person in another car, I didn't feel comfortable continuing by myself. Headed back, and good thing because I lost one fog light along the way. Was able to retrieve the light and hook it back up. :P Location is Tinkham RD, east of North Bend, WA. Exit 42 off of I-90. Definitely a great spot, from what I can tell. First time being there, and I'll definitely go back soon! |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 7 - First Drive)
Add to EJ Playlist Final part! This is the first time I take the car with the new engine on the road. At first, there is a horrible misfire. As soon as I put my foot down, I have no power and it stumbles, occasionally popping. Got home, researched the issue, and found that two of my spark plug wires were mixed up. Moved them around, and she runs perfect! Again, the exhaust noise is because of old gaskets and because a bolt stud is stripped. But otherwise, she runs perfect! The new plugs, wires, and disty cap allow for an illusion of a lot of power! I still need to hook up my horns, but I'll do that within the next couple days. I've done a lot of driving tonight, including freeway driving, and she runs perfect! She stays nice and cool, so she should be good to go. Gonna monitor bolts and fluids over the next few days. My first engine swap has been a success, and I'm proud to say it. Ran into a couple problems throughout the swap, but I have overcome and finished the job successfully. :) I am definitely looking forward to driving my car. In total, the engine swap cost me about $500. Including the original diagnosis, I have put countless hours in labor. The transmission/cl utch swap I did a few months ago cost me $500. Combined, these two equal to about $1000 in parts. Keep in mind that I bought my car for $825. If I didn't love my car, I would have junked it and bought a new one. |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 6 - First Start)
Add to EJ Playlist Well, here is the initial start after my engine swap! I did not replace the exhaust gaskets, plus the exhaust couldn't bolt on right, so that's why it's loud like that. The engine is also misfiring, which will be solved in the next video. But otherwise, she's running pretty good! The best part is, I put everything back together properly. :P |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 5 - Engine Install)
Add to EJ Playlist Not much caught on camera, but in this video, I get the engine put back together. Not much to say, as everything is explained in the video. Install time only took about four hours, which is what I'd expected. Not a very complicated motor, so there wasn't much to install. :P |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 4 - Engine Removal)
Add to EJ Playlist Sorry, this isn't much of a video. I didn't get the actual removal on camera, but oh well. Basically, I undid the four bell housing bolts, the four exhaust bolts, the four motor mount bolts, and the two bolts on the pitch stopper, and she came out. I recruited my sister to help pull the engine, but we couldn't pull it out. However, some random lady was walking on the street and she helped out. The oil pump got caught on the subframe that the radiator bolts on to, and bent it a little bit. Spilled coolant everywhere, along with some oil. But I cleaned that up before the video. The engine itself wasn't too heavy, but just the angle that it was at made it difficult. An engine hoist would've been EXTREMELY helpful, but obviously was not necessary. Anyways, to end this, I'll just say this: Pulling this engine was WAY easier than it looked. Once you start taking things off, it becomes more apparent how easy it is to pull the motor. I'm definitely gonna buy an engine hoist sometime in the future for any future projects. :) |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #41
Add to EJ Playlist Very short video today. Because my car's not running, I haven't been driving much (mostly getting rides from my mom and sister). Ergo, I haven't filmed a lot. But I'm getting a new engine on Sunday, so I should be driving my car again soon. :) Clip #1: Off camera action. We got to the four-way-stop at exactly the same time. I was on the right, so I had the right-of-way. A couple seconds after I enter the intersection, she starts pulling out. The entire time, she didn't look my way until I honked. Accidentally drifted the corner too, haha. Clip #2: Stereotypical BMW driver jumps the queue. First, he goes slowly to try and merge in behind me, but the car behind doesn't let him in. He gets honked at. So he accelerates and bullies me out of my lane, like he had the right to. As you can tell, I have zero tolerance. :P Clip #3: I never understand why people pull so far forward of the stop line... What's the point? Clip #4: A tree had fallen down in the road, which caught me off guard. Was kinda frightening, since I just replaced the brake pads and rotors on the Mustang a few hours before. Didn't have time to bleed the brakes, so the brake pedal was really soft. But still managed to get ABS to kick in. Clip #5: Bus is signalling left. I let him in. He turns right. Ugh. |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 3 - Radiator & Oil Removal)
Add to EJ Playlist Okay, this part involves me talking. Just uploading the raw clip from the GoPro of me taking off the clutch fan, pulling the radiator, and draining the oil. Pretty much, there isn't a whole lot left to do until I get an engine hoist. I'm only a couple bolts and nuts away from being able to pull the engine. Hopefully I can borrow a hoist from a friend, or I'll have to rent one (which would be bad considering I don't have much money). |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 2 - Power Steering Removal)
Add to EJ Playlist Made some progress with my engine removal. Disconnected and removed the power steering pump. Was quite easy, as it was only three bolts. Hardest part was finding the third bolt. As you can see, I was looking under the pump trying to find it, but had no luck. Turns out is was on top like the other three, but it was just caked in so much grease that I couldn't see it. |
[HD] EA82 Engine Swap (Part 1 - Alternator & Intake Removal)
Add to EJ Playlist Officially swapping the engine in my car to get it running! I got a cracked cylinder head about a month and a half ago. The car's been sitting in my driveway since, practically untouched. Now, I've finally got the money to do something about it. Messaged a friend on the USMB (Ultimate Subaru Message Board) to see if he'd help me with replacing the cylinder head. He told me that he had an EA82 longblock with only 116K miles on it, with a brand new water pump. I said I'd take it if he helped install it, and that's what we're gonna do. My engine has 261K miles on it, so it'll definitely be an upgrade. I need to transfer my intake manifold, alternator, power steering, and vacuum lines over to the new engine. But they're all in good condition, so that's no problem. I am going to clean every single part I take off, so it'll be nice and shiny and new looking. :) The new engine install will be next weekend. So expect a number of videos from now until the finishing of the project. Most of it will be shot with the POV perspective with my GoPro. My car is a 1990 Subaru Loyale, and the donor engine is from a 1990 Subaru Loyale RS. |
[HD] POV Trailer Reversing 2
Add to EJ Playlist My mom is the worst guide, ever. :P Haha, again, not sure why I'm uploading this. Just thought it looked cool. This backing in is a lot more difficult than the previous one, since I have to fit the trailer in behind my car in our steep driveway. I can't move my car out of the way, since my car does not run at the moment. So I must go from the busy street, down our steep driveway, and behind my car. Not too easy, but not bad once you've done it a few times. |
[HD] POV Trailer Reversing
Add to EJ Playlist Not really sure why I'm uploading this, as it's nothing special. I just thought I'd film and upload this short clip of me backing our 16' travel trailer in to a site. Not a difficult backing spot, but was still fun. Maybe you'll find some interest in this video, but you may not. I found the footage to be interesting, so I thought I'd share it. :P Sorry about the blurriness on the screen. The camera lens has a scratch on it and the case was a little dirty. |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #40 (Canadian Edition)
Add to EJ Playlist Apologies for the long video. Not too many bad drivers, but just random clips throughout Canada. :P Also, because of the length of the video, Sony Vegas didn't let me render it in 1080p for whatever reason. So hopefully you can deal with 720p, haha. It's also a pretty quiet compilation, since we never really listened to music. And I did a bunch of fast forwarding, so bear with me on that. All in all, the drivers up north weren't much different. Maybe a little worse. But once you got out of downtown, they were really good! Clip #1: Crossing the USA/Canada border. Nothing new to me, since I used to play hockey. :D Clip #2: One of the many beautiful bridges in Canada. Clip #3: Car on the left fails to yield to the car on the right. Then the oncoming car fails to yield to us. Clip #4: Backing in the trailer to the RV park. Yeah, RV parks really aren't our thing, but we had to try at least one. Clip #5: Guy fails to yield to the taxi. Then, there are a bunch of intersection blockers. Clip #6: In the park, a guy's ball falls on the road, right in front of a sign that warns of that kind of thing happening. Spotted a Nissan GTR too. Sorry for the graphics glitch here. No idea why it happens. Clip #7: Pickup truck on the right is kinda aggressive, swerving around people trying to parallel park. Clip #8: Chevrolet pickup in front almost runs the red. He couldn't see because of the semi in front. Clip #9: Lady pulling out of a parallel parking space cuts it close to the car in the left lane. Then she pulls off the road shortly after. Clip #10: Rolls-Royce in front, with a license plate number of 666. Then a random jaywalker. Then the construction lady makes me stop to let an excavator go by. Clip #11: Oncoming cars swerve into my lane. Doesn't look that close, but it was a bit frightening. Clip #12: Pedestrian runs across. Clip #13: Audi pulls in front of me. Clip #14: Red light runner. Clip #15: Queue jumper comes out of nowhere, then turns off the road shortly after. Clip #16: When towing the trailer, my braking distance is really long. Here, the brake pedal was almost touching the floor. Clip #17: Going through the woods to find a campsite. Clip #18: A small town filled with native Canadians (or descendants of). They were really friendly! Clip #19: A bunch of offroading clips. Broke (or at least damaged) the fuel gauge from this road. Clip #20: A bunch of nice, classic cars going the opposite direction. Maybe Canada's version of the Gumball 3000? Clip #21: A little more offroading. :P Clip #22: Two cops pulled over one car in the middle of nowhere basically. Clip #23: Pickup truck illagally passes me and the car in front. Clip #24: Going back across the border, heading home. |
[HD] Towing A 1966 Kit Companion Travel Trailer
Add to EJ Playlist The video editing got screwed up towards the end! But oh well, haha. Basically, we've had this trailer for a few months. Did a lot of work on it, such as fixing a leaking roof, dry rot, etc. This was the first time that we've towed the trailer since we got it. We didn't even tow it home, since we didn't have a hitch on the Explorer. However, since then, I've installed the hitch on the car, so we are able to tow it. The only thing not hooked up is the trailer brakes. But to be honest, I don't think we really need to. Braking distance is for sure extended, but all in all, it's not that bad. It hasn't been weighed, but I believe the trailer weights 2,000 to 3,000 lbs (900-1400 kgs). Tongue weight is, I'd say, 200 to 300 lbs (90-140 kgs). The trailer is 16 ft (4.9 m) long. Single axle, and the axle is pretty far forward. This did help to induce trailer sway at freeway speeds. I noticed the trailer liked to sway once above 60 MPH (100 KM/H), but once I slowed to 55 MPH (90 KM/H), the sway went away. Otherwise, it towed great. The brand new trailer tires helped. My camera had died when we arrived at our "campsite," so I didn't get any footage in the daylight. But yeah, the trailer towed well and was comfortable and warm. Gonna get a bunch more footage towing, as I am heading up to Vancouver, Canada, in a couple weeks. |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #39
Add to EJ Playlist Well, just kinda an average week. Maybe more honking than usual, but I probably honked more than the situations called for. About half of these clips are bad drivers, the other half are just random clips. :P Clip #1: Not your average jaywalker. :P Clip #2: The Toyota two cars ahead misses the left turn lane. Then a quick braking check. The Mustang definitely needs new brakes. Clip #3: Truck cuts over from the right lane to the left turn lane. Clip #4: Kinda hard to see, but the left front tires of that car has a seriously flat tire. So much so it was wobbling and shaking the car, and I thought the wheel was ready to come off. When I passed the car, the driver almost seemed oblivious to it, haha. Clip #5: Sharing the road with a Ford GT. I got really excited, and acted like an immature teenage girl, but whatever. :P I was in a good mood that day, haha. It's embarrassing for me to watch this clip. Wish I would've just shut up. Clip #6: Car turns left from straight/right lane. Affected me turning right on red. Clip #7: This is kinda hard to explain, since everything is off camera. Okay, so there is an intersection to my left. At the intersection, there are dual left turn lanes. During this clip, both lanes are turning left. The right lane was clear, and there was only traffic in the left lane. I decided to make my turn. AFTER I started pulling out, a red Ford Focus then signaled and moved into the right lane, seemingly intentionally. S/he could've gotten in the right lane before the intersection, since both lanes turn left. And if that wasn't possible, s/he could've waited until after the driveway I was in before changing lanes. Clip #8: I have found the Mustang that spun out last November. He is driving much better now. He actually stopped at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross, haha. Clip #9: White van man makes a last second decision, cuts me off, and moves over to the far right lane. Clip #10: Some V8 acceleration. Doesn't look fast on camera, but this car can actually make the skin on your face pull back, even though it doesn't have that much power. :P Clip #11: A small powerslide. Clip #12: A car decides to parallel park, but doesn't signal until it's too late. He starts reversing towards the car behind. The car behind honks like crazy. Clip #13: Jaywalker. Clip #14: Car makes illegal u-turn in the middle of the road, on a crosswalk. Clip #15: Radio announcer seductively says, "Mmmmmmm, Dick's." Sounded so wrong. :P Clip #16: A really bad intersection thing. I don't even know how to explain it, haha. Clip #17: AAA tow truck pulls out on me. Maybe a bit too much honking, but these instances annoy me. Just because the right lane lets you through, doesn't mean I have to. I still have the right-of-way, and I am not obligated to stop for you. So don't think I will. I also am against these situations, because the accident that I witnessed last year had these circumstances. One lane was stopped, a car turned in front, and crunch. I don't want to see that happen again, especially if I'm involved in the crash. Clip #18: Jaywalkers. I did not give a single fuck. I would've ran them over if they didn't stop. I usually don't swear, but that's the only way to describe it. There are two crosswalks half a block away, so why not use them? A car behind lays on the horn at them. They're lucky I wasn't changing into the left lane, and didn't see them because I was checking my blind spot. Clip #19: Same clip as the last one, but a different subject. A Nissan Leaf up ahead starts making a u-turn, but just stops on the crosswalk. He later moved after I had stopped at the intersection. Clip #20: Queue jumper. I hate them. S/he bullied me out of my lane. I would've held my ground, but s/he would've just ran into me. |
[HD] '99 Ford Mustang Throttle Cable Fix
Add to EJ Playlist To start off, I know it's dark and hard to see. I would've tried better lighting, but it's a really tight fit under the dash. If you have any questions on what I'm doing or why I'm doing it, please feel free to ask. So, I've always found the gas pedal strange in our Mustang. It sat pretty close to the floor. If I did a "full throttle" acceleration, it wouldn't feel like it was going as fast as it could. Under normal driving, the gas pedal isn't much to complain about. But I wanted it fixed. Just pulling the gas pedal up, I could feel all the free play and how much the throttle cable has stretched over the years. Looked it up online, and there is no proper adjustment on the Mustang. There are only fixes like these that you can do. The only permanent way to fix this is to get a brand new throttle cable. But anyways, here is this fix. The known "good" way to do this is get a nylon spacer 1" in length, and put two hose clamps around it. However, just going through my garage, I found a wire tap. Pulled the metal part out, and put the tap on the cable. It's the perfect size and seems to be holding up. Not sure how long it'll last though. Basically, the goal is to put a spacer in between the top of the gas pedal and the end of the throttle cable. Adjusting your throttle cable is a good way to give the illusion of a performance increase and a more responsive throttle. On some cars, there's an actual way to adjust it. On cars like this generation of Mustang, you have to do something like this. |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #38
Add to EJ Playlist Very few clips of bad drivers. This is mostly just a random clip kind of video. Most of it is just me sliding in the rain, and the POV clip I added. Only about 2 minutes of what you regularly see. Clip 1: A beautiful, near perfect condition EA81 Subaru hatch, from the early '80s. :P Clip 2: The two cars in front of me completely blow the red light (for the metered on ramp). Clip 3: Failure to yield. Clip 4: Car pulls out. Not that close, but then he turns right immediately after pulling in front of me (when there were no cars behind). Clip 5: Truck pulls in front of me. Again, not that close, but close enough for me to give him an "I'm here" honk. He, along with a couple cars, then run the red light. Clip 6: Some police cars. Kinda found it funny how one car went one way, and the other went another way. Not to mention that some of the cross traffic failed to stop for the police. Here's a bonus POV clip, of me driving down the road. Wanted to just test out the GoPro POV or whatever, as I will try this style of filming for my next repair video. Wasn't necessarily gonna include it, but I thought it looked cool, and I caught an Audi Q7 jumping out of turn at the four-way stop. The rest of the clips are me drifting and powersliding in the rain. Again, wasn't gonna include these, but I know some time in the future, I'm gonna wanna watch these clips. Some of the slides were intentional, some weren't. |
[HD] '99 Ford Explorer Brake Pad Replacement
Add to EJ Playlist Replacing the brake pads on all four wheels on my mom's '99 Ford Explorer. I believe this procedure should be the same (or similar) on Ford Rangers and Mercury Mountaineers of the same era, although disc brakes are very similar on all cars. I would like to start making repair videos. I'm not a professional mechanic (yet), my camera work isn't the best, and I don't know how many of my regular viewers will watch repair videos, but I want to make them. I like working on cars, and like making videos and posting them on YouTube, so why not join the two? Anyways, this is basically the procedure for changing the pads on many disc brake assemblies. The two things you should do that I didn't is replace/turn the rotors and bleed the brakes. But, sometimes you don't do things because your customers don't want them done (albeit in this case, my "customer" was my mom). Might make a brake bleeding video later. Anyways, hope you enjoy. Disc brakes are quite easy to do. Takes me about 20 minutes per wheel. Most of that time is spent jacking up/down the car and taking the wheels on/off. |
[HD] When People Stop And Help
Add to EJ Playlist Just a clip today of some people (including myself) getting together to help this woman who had run out of gas. I was surprised that so many people stopped and helped. I rarely see anyone stop to help someone having car trouble, even though it only takes five minutes of their day. But yeah, we got her van off the road and into a parking stall, which was nice. Had about a total of 4-5 guys, but I don't remember exactly. |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #37
Add to EJ Playlist Yup, so been driving the Mustang since my car is not running, and won't be for a few weeks. Today was the first day of classes, so I believe that I should get some more clips, since I'm driving every day. Clip #1: This box truck couldn't stay in his/her lane on the freeway. S/he was swerving about. However, once we exited the freeway, his/her driving got much better. Clip #2: This is the moment when my car's cylinder head cracked. Gonna take a while to fix it. Clip #3: Car in front randomly goes to the right after the light turned green. Clip #4: First, SUV basically turns right from the straight lane. Then, a slow elderly driver. My honking was unnecessary, but oh well. Clip #5: This was uploaded in a separate clip. SUV drifts into my lane. Clip #6: Going through vehicle emissions. Passed, although the test itself is not difficult. :P Clip #7: Car takes turn a bit wide. Clip #8: Guy pulls out of parking space without even looking in my direction.... Clip #9: This was it's own separate video too. Car turns left in front of me. Clip #10: A nearly perfect condition early '80s EA81 Subaru wagon. These are VERY rare, especially in this condition. Clip #11: Car jumps across a few lanes to get to the exit. Clip #12: Smart car is blocking my way. Luckily she backed up. Clip #13: Did a small powerslide. My mom was cool with it. :P Clip #14: Self explanatory. Tried to sneak past her, but she started reversing, almost into me. She was on the phone.... Clip #15: So many people do this now. Put their hazards on and block the roadway. Clip #16: Dual turn fail. Almost every car screwed it up somehow. Road markings are hard to see though. |
[HD] Another Close Call!
Add to EJ Playlist Well, I seem to be having bad luck this week. Got into another close call. Again, debatable as to whether this should or should not be in its own video, but I would like to separate this clip from the compilation. Basically, I'm just driving normally. This area was pretty busy around this time, but nothing too bad. Then as I'm driving up this hill, this car decides to turn left right in front of me. I honk, expecting him to get out of the way in time. However, I notice he isn't getting out of the way in time. I slam on the brake, making ABS kick in. If it wasn't for having disc brakes all around and going uphill, I would've clipped his rear driver side quarter panel. After making his turn, he then proceeds to honk at me! Like I did something wrong! Ugh. Pissed off, I slammed on the gas, spinning the wheels. I would've done a full burnout if it wasn't my sister's car and my sister's tires. :P Oh, and my mom was behind me too. She wasn't driving the car right behind me, but the car behind that, haha. Oh, good thing I didn't get rear ended, either. By the way, I won't say ABS saved me here. I felt it kicked in, but then I backed off the brake pedal a bit to threshold brake. It doesn't look too close on camera, but when I hit the brakes, I was one car length away from him. At 35 MPH, I would've hit him in less than half a second if I hadn't braked. |
[HD] My Closest Call In A While
Add to EJ Playlist Not the closest near-accident out there, but it's the closest one I've had in a while. As you may be able to tell, here in the Seattle area, we have some bad drivers, but nothing terrible. Not too many people do stupid enough things to endanger others. So the few times that I have to slam on the brakes or do an emergency maneuver, I tend to post them as individual clips. Basically, the driver in my left lane started merging into my lane. The road markings are kinda hard to see, and I was in his/her blind spot, so s/he just drove on straight, when the lanes slalom to the left. I think the other driver was just ignorant, and felt bad, because he/she didn't move over to the right lane any time after that. But still, I don't think it's that hard to see the road markings, and you should be able to follow your lane. |
[HD] Dash Cam Compilation #36
Add to EJ Playlist First off, sorry for the rendering glitches! I tried to fix them, and it didn't work. Didn't feel like re-rendering, so I hope you can live with it. Guess something is going wrong with Sony Vegas and my graphics card. I'll try and fix it ASAP. Clip 1: At least two people tried to park in this spot, but for some reason, couldn't. It's a long and boring clip, but I just find it funny how easily I was able to get into the spot. Clip 2: Green light sitter. Clip 3: Car turns left in front of another car. There was honking, although inaudible to the camera. Clip 4: Car drive in the oncoming lanes to turn left. Clip 5: Doing a little bit of a handling test. Muted the audio because I was embarrassingly talking to myself. :P Clip 6: First day with my exhaust leak, and I'm already gettin' looks. :D Although he may have been pointing at the camera. Clip 7: Oncoming car drifts into my lane. Clip 8: Another green light sitter, but this is an old man that drives slow. Clip 9: Car cuts me off, over the solid white line, with no signal. Clip 10 - end: Just clips of me towing my trailer. This is the first time that I've had the rear camera while towing, and I thought it was cool to watch the trailer behind my car. Drove 100 miles (160 KM; round trip) to deliver my old transmission to another USMB member. As part of the trade, I got an axle (my inner boot tore sometime in the first 100 miles of my D/R swap), fixed my climate control settings (I broke a part during the D/R swap), and might have fixed my cold idle issue (will have to see in the morning). It's always fun hanging out with other Soob guys. :D |
[HD] Initial Start After Clutch/Transmission Replacement
Add to EJ Playlist The first start after my clutch and transmission replacement. I didn't quite put the exhaust on right, so I do have an exhaust leak. New gaskets and redoing the front four bolts should fix it, although I kinda like the sound. Might hold off on replacing the gaskets for a while. :D Yeah, surprisingly, I did everything correct! Not bad for my first transmission replacement, clutch replacement, and my biggest project to date! |
[HD] Transmission Swap (Day 2, 3, 4, & 5)
Add to EJ Playlist Alright, apologies for three things. One, it's a fairly long video. Two, it's been a while since I posted the first day. And three, for not filming a whole lot. But anyways, this is the rest of my clutch/transmis sion replacement. The only thing not in this video is the initial start of the car, which is being uploaded right now in a separate video. |
[HD] Transmission Swap (Day 1)
Add to EJ Playlist This is the video of the first day of my transmission swap. Currently don't feel like writing anything, but check back later. I might have written something. :D |
