Minister Parrish Jones' New Year's Resolution to Support Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Add to EJ Playlist  Minister Parish Jones of the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America, tells the story of an immigrant couple and their child, named Eddie, who became very sick one day while his parents were working in the fields and came very close to dying but survived, even though his parents could not afford to take him to the emergency room. He speaks about how his faith tells him that stories like this should never happen and that we should treat strangers the same way we treat our friends, and offer them the same opportunities afforded to citizens and their families. Mayom Lazaro Call on People of Faith to Help Reunite Families

Add to EJ Playlist  Mayom Lazaro is a Sudanese refugee who arrived in the U.S. in 2003 and who now works for a refugee resettlement agency called RefugeeOne in Chicago. Tells his personal story of how he was separated from his wife and son when he moved to the U.S.. how his wife just arrived 2 years ago due to the complex U.S. refugee process but that his son did not accompany her. Although his son lives in Canada now, Mayom cannot visit or see him and he has not seen his son since 2004. Jasmine Franco's New Years Resolution to Use Faith to Support Immigration Reform

Add to EJ Playlist  Jasmine Franco, a member of the First United Methodist Church who also works at the Washtenaw County Workers Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan, shares her personal and moving story of being separated from her mother at age 17 when her mother was arrested and deported by immigration authorities and her father left soon after to avoid being arrested. She chose to stay in the U.S. because this is her country and she was born here. Her extraordinarily deep faith has kept her going through the hardest times and her New Year's Resolution is to volunteer at an ESL program and to pray for immigrant families. Help young people in similar situations who weren't born here like Jasmine, but were brought to the US as children and face many of the same situations, by supporting the DREAM Act. She was born in Burma with a birth defect so that one leg was shorter than the other. When she and her family were brought to the U.S., this organization could not find a job for her, and this is not the kind of welcome that we want to extend to refugees who come here looking for a better life. His New Year's Resolution is to get the Peters Bill, a bill that will help refugees get resettled with dignity, to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote.
