Rooftop singing, downtown LA in the background - I think I found a new video spot! I've studied this song and played it probably like 100x , and I'm realizing that it wasn't until late in Bob Dylan's career, after writing hundreds of songs was he able to craft this gem. Cool little AABABA structure, with a nice descending chord progression and lyrics that develop throughout 4 verses. My favorite part though, is the first bridge - love those lyrics. So I'm reminiscing a bit now on that fateful trip to LA back in June. (Note to self: I should post this stuff more real-time, starting now). On "Blue" - it's a little jazzy chord progression I learned 1st year in college on my Putnam balcony back in Berkeley (thanks Eric!), that I've carried around and tried to make into a song since. It's probably actually the 2nd song with words that I ever attempted to write. I think I came up with the Blue "chorus" at a Deltasig retreat jamming with Arjun one time, and the first verse I wrote down in a cab in Beijing summer 2009 on my way to Tun bar, for my first openmic ever. I think after a few Tsing Daos, I scribbled down the second verse before my turn came. Well, it's still not done (I'm working on it!) - but this version is the version I usually play live these days. On Kulak's - I actually heard about this place when I was at the Bazaar cafe in SF, chatting with Stevie Gurr - a very friendly and knowledgeable folk musician here in SF who had done some time in LA. He told me Kulak's was one of the best openmics in LA for singer/songwrit ers. His words were ringing in my head that whole week in LA, so I ended up extending my trip so I could drive up to NoHo and check it out that Monday. The place is really awesome - as awesome as you would imagine a live music venue to be that's run by a guy (Paul Kulak) that keeps it afloat purely through volunteers and donations - they don't serve drinks at Kulak's, just live music xp. Great chill eccentric/creat ive vibe, very cool and supportive crew of musicians, and they film and record everything for you. If you want a DVD, it's $20 - pretty sweet deal. The coolest thing was the camera and sound was all run by volunteers, i.e. every few people someone from behind a camera would go up and play haha. So cool. Unfortunately, at the end of the night my name wasn't drawn, BUT, someone gave up their spot after they heard I had come all the way from SF (thanks again man!). I studied the song this week, very simple chords and rhythm - but the way the song lyrics/arrangem ent/melody/voca l range/tempo and (especially) production build and release tension is pretty intricate. Add to EJ Playlist  "She Was Mine" is near and dear to both me and my cousin Brian Wong. Written by Jesse Barrera and AJ Rafael, it's the first song I remember seeing on youtube where I realized youtubers could really write songs (beyond just doing good covers). It's funny because after I first heard it (from the Albert Posis and Mark Mejia cover, lolwut?), I learned it immediately and it's been a favorite of mine to play ever since. About 2 years ago, I was over at my cousins' house one day, and they were talking about how Brian couldn't stop playing this one song in his room. Turns out, it was a song called "She Was Mine". We attempted to cover this She Was Mine back then, but kept messing up at the very end. Today, we decided to finish it. This is a dance-y electronica beat I made, with rap lyrics I wrote about everybody's favorite clubbing question - Where The Ladies At? For this week's sonic experiment, I studied songs by FarEast Movement (o my dirtybass) - mostly for their structure, rhythms, and sounds - and tried to capture their fun party vibe. The way they build and release tension through lyrics, rhythm, adlibs, and production - is a LOT more complicated than I expected. This was another vid where after writing the song, playing and mixing everything got kinda stressful - but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
