This is an arrangement that went through many washes before I felt like it was clean enough to wear on Youtube and I hope as a single-guitar arrangement, it does justice to the original which is an out-and-out masterpiece of song. The problem and the trick here is sandwiching the melody into the same register as the original piano accompaniment. This can't be done without a fair amount of sacrifice to the original piece. I only go for the melody in a higher register for the final stanza (if you will), the part about 'minha agonia' that repeats. Adding a beat here and there also seems inevitable. Hope you like it. The original instrumental version of this song as Jobim composed it was called "Amparo". Without any denigration to 'bossa nova' intended (obviously I love all those songs too), this particular song is a clear indication that Jobim as a composer went galaxies beyond any given stylistic strait-jacket. It's bitching hard to play this at full speed, and the thing is over before you know it, so i slowed it down a wee tad for your listening and dancing pleasure. My arrangement. My original inspiration for doing this was the great Frank Sinatra/Nelson Riddle version which is on Frank's album "Only the Lonely" and features a similar solo acoustic guitar opening (Al Caiola I think), but I like Dexter Gordon's version just as much and incorporated a little of that as well (Mainly the middle. Frank and Nelson's middle 8 is all airy-fairy and weep-sleepy. Recently, however, I saw the charming Billy Wilder film "Avanti!" (which i highly recommend as I do with all Wilder films) starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills and this tune is featured in that film in its traditional waltz rhythm. And, well, I said "hey, I gotta play that". Anyhow, hope you like it. The version I learned this from is by Elyse O'Connor on her album "Blue Moon and Spacious Skies" available on Itunes.
