Ellie49: Happy Christmas Eve, everybody! I woke up this morning hearing that timpani at the very beginning in my head! I always listen to this Oratorio on Christmas Eve while trimming the tree (which has been up for a while with the lights but no ornaments!) I give heartfelt thanks for the work of John Eliot Gardiner over the years. His interpretation of Baroque music is simply beyond compare.

IfByWhiskey486: By the way, BACH'S CHRISTMAS ORATORIO isn't pure religious music at all. The music was reused from various preexisting SECULAR cantatas he wrote, some even depicting pagan characters from the Greek-Roman pantheon. They weren't even originally written for the church. Bach's librettist, Picander, simply provided new poetry which Bach could easily write into the preexisting secular music. It doesn't seem like you "understand this type of work" either.

IfByWhiskey486: Do you honestly think it requires Christian faith to appreciate or understand the music? Do you need to believe Macbeth was real to appreciate or understand Shakespeare? Or do you need to believe in the Greek pantheon to appreciate Homer? I doubt Bach believed Greco-Roman gods were real, nor did his audience need to think they were real to appreciate or understand Bach's secular cantatas. Bach was a Christian, fine. But your logic frankly sucks.
